It's Not so Scary to Cut it Short. The TWA
Nothing, and I mean nothing – is as fierce as a cool, sharp and on-point teeny-weeny-afro. And I mean that. I have worn almost every style out there on my natural hair. And the one that gave me the most power, was my TWA. Choosing to keep it short has its challenges but if you can manage it, the TWA can turn out to be your best friend.
But....
"I have a big head, so I can't wear a TWA." Sister, your head is the size it is supposed to be. You may think it's big compared to hers over there, or compared to that woman you saw on the street but your head is made for you. And if you think you have a big head, how can wearing a LOT of hair on top of a "big head" make it look smaller? I never understood that reasoning.
"I have a funny shaped head." Girl, all of us have differently shaped heads. Unless you have had a severe cranial injury or malformation, your head is shaped the way it is supposed to be shaped. It may be longer, broader or flatter than that other person's but that doesn't mean that it is "funny-shaped". Consider that wearing a TWA with a section of hair left longer in a diagonal or adding color can create a beautiful illusion.
Anyway --- a TWA could be just what you need to bring out your best features, your eyes, your lips and your cheekbones.
"I'll look like a man." Come on now… you won't look like a man unless you want to.
"TWA's only look good on thin women." No. Just no.
"My hair is too nappy." That is impossible. In fact, the tighter your hair texture is, the more fierce your TWA will be. The closer you can get without being scalpy. The more texture you can create with waxes and pomades. The deeper you can go with color and tone. The longer you can keep your hair in a TWA looking sharp between trims. Shall I continue?
"My hair isn't nappy enough." Well yeah, this can be a problem because you will need some texture to hold the style without flopping and may not be able to have a consistent texture all over. Your hair may be best cut into a layered cut, longer on top to give you some curl, and faded in the back. Or an asymmetrical cut could be fierce too.
"I'm too old." LOL. I'm going to leave that one alone and just show some pics.
"My ears are too big/stick out." Enhance them. Just put on some show-stopping earrings and go.
"I have patchy hair/ bald spots." This condition needs special attention. You need to work out why you have these bald areas – could be hormones, a skin condition, allergies, medication… once you do then you can approach hairstyles in the know. A TWA may not be right for you unless your bare areas don't worry you. It also depends where your hair is balding. A hairdresser can help you decide what to do.
