Relaxer Damage Info
If you want to go natural after your disastrous relaxer experience, you will need to care and heal your scalp to make sure your hair grows in healthy.
You may notice your hair changes after relaxing, please see our information on SCAB HAIR.
1. Get Immediate Care
- Rinse Thoroughly: If you experience burning or irritation during the relaxing process, rinse the relaxer out immediately with lukewarm water. Burning does not mean "it's working" - it means it's burning your scalp and destroying your hair.
- Use Neutralizing Shampoo: Use a neutralizing shampoo immediately to stop the chemical process and restore the scalp's pH balance.
2. Assess the Damage after Step 1
- Mild Irritation: May cause redness or slight discomfort. May tingle a little and sensitive to touch.
- Moderate Damage: There is burning, scabbing, and some hair loss either right away or within a day.
- Severe Damage: May include significant burns, large patches of hair loss, and scarring. You need to see a professional to prevent infection.
3. Get a Professional Consultation
- Dermatologist or Trichologist: Consult a dermatologist or trichologist to assess scalp damage and receive a tailored treatment plan.
4. Treatment Options for non-Severe Damage
- Topical Treatments: Use soothing creams or ointments, such as those containing aloe vera, hydrocortisone, or other anti-inflammatory agents.
- Medicated Shampoos: Shampoos containing ingredients like ketoconazole, selenium sulfide, or salicylic acid may help soothe and heal the scalp.
- Moisturizers and Oils: Natural oils (coconut oil, jojoba oil, olive oil) and scalp moisturizers can help hydrate and soothe the scalp.
5. Supportive Hair Care Practices
- Avoid Heat and Chemicals: Refrain from using heat-styling tools or further chemical treatments until the scalp has fully healed and your hair has recovered. If you use heat on damaged hair it will break off.
- Gentle Hair Care: Use sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners, and avoid tight hairstyles that can pull on the scalp. Protect your hair at night with a satin bonnet or satin pillowcase.
- Butters and OIls: Using butters such as Shea and nourishing oils such as Chebe DAILY will help protect your hair from breakage. Do not use anything with mineral oil on your hair or scalp - and opt for natural butters and salves for sensitive areas.
6. Nutrition and Hydration
- Eat a Balanced Diet: Ensure a diet rich in vitamins and minerals that support hair and scalp health, such as vitamins A, C, D, E, and biotin.
- Ultra Hydration: Drink plenty of water and eat foots high in water content to keep your body and scalp hydrated.
7. Patience and Time
- The Healing Process: Scalp healing can take time. Be patient and consistent with your treatment regimen.
- Hair Growth: Hair regrowth may take several months as your follicles may be damage. Do tension-free, low-manipulation hairstyles.
When to Seek Medical Attention
- Persistent Pain or Discomfort: If pain or discomfort persists for longer than 2 days, seek medical attention.
- Infection Signs: Look out for signs of infection, such as pus, increased redness, or swelling, and consult a healthcare professional fast if these occur.
Reversing relaxer damage requires a combination of immediate care, ongoing treatment, and preventive measures to protect your scalp and hair health in the future.
