The study examined hair product use (hair dyes, chemical relaxers and cholesterol or placenta-containing conditioners) among African American (AA) and White women, and explored associations with breast cancer. It also studied the use of relaxers among White women and found a link between relaxer use and increased incidence of cancer and other illnesses.
The findings of this study showed among Black women, use of dark shades of hair dye was associated with increased breast cancer risk. The use of dark shades and higher frequency of use were associated with ER+ disease. These use of these products also led to a 72% increase specifically in estrogen-positive breast cancer which accounts for 80% of all breast cancer diagnoses in African American women. ER+ diseases represent neurodegenerative disorders including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and bipolar disorder.
These findings support a relationship between the use of some hair products we have previously though of as harmless, and breast cancer. It is important to understand that this study does not say that if you use these products you will get breast cancer, but it is something to put into your arsenal when deciding whether or not to use these products. Opt for a natural alternative or don't use them at alll. There has never been a better time to reduce the chemicals you put on your body.
Be sure to perform your breast self-examination every month and if you have a genetic link to breast cancer, get regular mammograms. That 15 minute examination could save your life.
